Religious leaders drag Osun monarch to Gov Oyetola over installation of Grand Mufti for Yorubaland

The Osun State Government has been petitioned over purported plans by the Oluwo of Iwo, Oba AndulRosheed Adewale Akanbi to install a Grand Mufti for Yorubaland.

The petition, which was forwarded by Islamic clerics under the aegis of Leagues of Imams and Alfa’s in SouthWest, Edo and Delta, requested Governor Adegboyega Oyetola to put a stop to plans by the monarch to carry on with the installation.

On a visit to Governor Adegboyega Oyetola in Osogbo, the clerics led by Alhaji Jamiu Kewulere, the Chief Imam of Ekiti State, accused the Oluwo of planning to install Sheikh Said Molaasan, as Grand Mufti of Yorubaland which contravened all norms.

The group’s petition, which was contained in a letter written by its Counsel, K. Odedeji and presented to the Osun State Governor, was also made available to the Osun State Police Commissioner, the State Director of the Department of State Security (DSS).

The Islamic clerics stated that the position of Grand Mufti was meant for an Islamic scholar of respect and the appointment must be carried out by Imams and Alfas.

The letter which was privy to reads, “To the amazement of our clients and every reasonable Muslim, information reaching our clients and which is also currently going viral is the attempt of the Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdul Rasheed Adewale Akanbi to install one Sheik Daud Imran Molaasan the Grand Mufti of Yorubaland, an action clearly outside the power of his office.

“It is against the above background we hereby have our clients’ instruction to call your attention to this bizarre action of Oluwo of Iwo and we are requesting you to stop same before it snowballs into intra-cities religious breach of the peace.”

Responding, Governor Oyetola promised to look into the matter and give it the attention it deserved.

He also assured the clerics that he would give them feedback as soon as possible and assured them that the impasse would be resolved amicably.
