Customs Imo/Abia Seeks Strategic Partnership with Nigeria Shippers’ Council South-East Zone

The Nigeria Customs Service, Imo/Abia Area Command on Wednesday, 25 June 2025 played host to the Nigeria Shippers’ Council (NSC) South-East Zone, as part of efforts to strengthen inter-agency collaboration and promote seamless trade facilitation across the region.

The delegation, led by the Zonal Director, Lilian King, was received at the Command’s Headquarters in Owerri by the Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Friday Akpan, alongside members of the Command’s management team.

Comptroller Akpan, in his welcome remarks, described the visit as a valuable opportunity to renew the longstanding relationship between the two institutions. He noted that since the establishment of the Shippers’ Council in 1978, collaboration with Customs has played a key role in the nation’s trade development efforts.

“Our duties extend beyond revenue generation and anti-smuggling,” the CAC remarked. “We are equally committed to creating a smooth and transparent environment for legitimate trade to thrive.”

In response, speaking on the purpose of their visit, Lilian King emphasised the Council’s interest in deepening cooperation with the Nigeria Customs Service. She praised the Service for its consistency in upholding trade policies and assured the Command of NSC’s continued support in driving Nigeria’s trade agenda forward.

We are here to strengthen ties and reinforce our shared commitment to seamless trade and National economic growth,” Lilian stated.

During the interactive session, Acting Deputy Comptroller of Revenue, Assistant Controller (AC) Ifedapo Akolade, sensitized the NSC team on the Unified Customs Management System (UCMS), codenamed B’Odogwu, which translates to “Border Strength.” He explained that the UCMS is a homegrown digital solution that has significantly improved revenue collection and operational efficiency within the Service.
